Happy Birthday Print E-mail
Thursday, 30 August 2007

August see Art-SX celebrate it's 2nd official birthday, and we are still going strong with over 80+ members and visitors from over 75 countries, but we are still lacking something, user interaction. I will be the first to admit there are still teething problems with the site itself, but we are constantly working on improving things for the best.

New bits and bobs include a direct news feed from the Southend on Sea Arts Council and a new forum, we would also like to welcome Amanda from Art4Essex as one of our new forum administrators.

We still have a lot to do, a new gallery is being looked into as there seems to still be some problems in that area, we have also moved servers yet again due to internal emails not being recieved on the old one, and also to speed up the site a little.

Charity art classes will be starting again in or around October time with an official Bob Ross instructor and we will be working with their official representatives here in the UK, plus there are more exciting developments on the way.

Unfortunately our application for an exhibition at Southend Library's main gallery space has been declined but we have been offered alternatives within the library itself and hopefully we will be holding some smaller exhibitions of your work there next year.

Well here's to another exciting year and hopefully another one to follow, take care all.

Colourful displays at the carnival
Colourful displays at the carnival

A CROWD of thousands lined Southend seafront for the town's annual carnival procession.

Dozens of colourful floats made their way along the seafront.

THE atmosphere was electric as thousands of excited families and friends lined up by the roadside to catch a glimpse of the spectacular carnival procession as it snaked its way along the seafront.

The grey skies couldn't dampen the spirits of the visitors to Southend's 101st carnival on Saturday, which began at Chalkwell Shelter and ended at the Castle pub, Eastern Esplanade.

This may have been the first time in 50 years that the seafront wasn't illuminated but there was plenty of sparkle with the brightly lit floats, glitter, ribbons, coloured silk, splashes of paint, make-up, balloons and wild outfits.

There was a touch of glamour as the Southend Carnival court float passed by and the girls gave their most regal waves.

Forget about Pirates of the Caribbean, Southend had its very own pirates.

Cavemen, fairies, belly dancers, and a wedding cake were just some of the eye catching characters that breezed by.

The famous green ogre Shrek and Homer Simpson even made an appearance.

And if you weren't close enough to see the annual procession, you could certainly hear it.

The sound of cheering crowds and lively music from the floats, Essex FM and a brass band filled the air before a firework display set the sky awash with colour.

What was clear that even after more than a century of existence, Southend Carnival is still going full throttle.

Gemma Steptoe, publicity officer for Southend Carnival Organisation, said: "

The event marked the end of a week's entertainment and festivities, which included a Carnival Fair, a children's competition, a dog show and a teddy bear's picnic, which are all aimed at raising money for local charities.

The bulk of the cash collected will go to StrokeBusters at Southend Hospital.

Panasonic offers digital photo training Print E-mail

Panasonic offers digital photo training

Artist Ben 3 Eagles got a point-and-shoot digital camera as a Christmas gift and, months later, still hadn't downloaded any photos to his computer.

Panasonic has a solution for that.

Earlier this month, 52-year-old 3 Eagles joined three other students, who had Sony, Sanyo, Casio and Samsung cameras, for a one-day beginner's workshop sponsored by Panasonic to teach the basics of using digital cameras.

Secaucus, N.J.-based Panasonic Consumer Electronics Co. has opened its Digital Photo Academy in 20 U.S. cities, holding one-day workshops limited to 15 people each. The classes are not limited to owners of Panasonic cameras.

Panasonic's digital-camera sales have been rising, and it has about a 5 percent share of the global digital camera market, according to the research group IDC. It trails Canon Inc., which has 17 percent of the market, and Nikon Corp., with 8 percent.

Lincoln Phillips, an instructor for workshops in Colorado, said photography allows people to keep family histories. "I'd hate to see that lost just because people are afraid of the technology," he said.

The artist, 3 Eagles, learned how to adjust picture quality and how the memory card works. He said he wanted to be able to e-mail photos of his artwork to contests and galleries.
