Canon EOS-1Ds Mark ll £4600 body only

Image
Canon EOS-1Ds Mark ll

There is only one specification you really need to know about this camera and that is it's 16.7 million pixels which is all crammed into it's full frame image sensor which is equivellent to a frame of 35mm film and is the only camera to offer such an impressive resolution in the professional range.

Picture quality is as good as it gets with file sizes this size, and is very impressive, not to mention the speed of the cameras start up time considering the amount of data it has to process which can be upto 15Mb in RAW mode. Continuos shooting is up to 4 frames per second and will take 32 shots. This may not appear impressive at first when compared to some enthusiuast D-SLRs but once you take into consideration the size of the image sensor it's quite amazing.

As with some of the other Canon's handling could be better, in particular the function setting could be vastly improved as some features require depressing one or two buttons whilst simultaneously turning an imput dial which can be a little fiddly.

Nikon D80 £600 body only

Image
Nikon D80

The D80's faults are very elusive when you consider it's a replacement for the D70s but with borrowed specifications from it's more expensive older brother the D200. The D80 costs about 40% less than the D200 but it has the same autofocus and metering systems not to mention the same impressive 10.2 million pixel image sensor. Don't start to think that due to the price Nikon may have cut corners in build quality as you would be mistaken, it is excellent and there is also a large range of features on offer through it's simple layout and clear menus.

In-camera retouching is included that allows for subtle filtration, red eye removal and even cropping of your images. The automatic white balance could do with improved performance which seems to be lacking with indoor shots but any cast can be easily remedied using your photo imaging software or by simply selecting one of the built in presets. Note if your upgrading the Nikon D80 only accepts SD memory cards.

Pentax K10D £749 body only

Image
Pentax K10D

The Pentax K10d has a solid body with no fewer than 72 dust and water seals, with the biggest sensor on a Pentax to date, a full 10.2 million pixels, which uses 22 bit technology unlike the regular 16 bit, so in theory it should deliver smoother graduations of colour. There is a shake reduction system and a new dust removal function which will clean the sensor avoiding picture blobs which can happen when dust enters the camera during lens changes. Image write speeds are very impressive and are said to be fast enough to allow for unlimited shooting using jpeg files at three frames per second.

There are plenty of features to satisfy enthusiast photographers and exsisting Pentax users may well be temted to upgrade especially when you discover the K10d accepts old manual Pentax optics although there functionality is limited.

Olympus E-400 £700 with Zuiko Digital 14-42mm Lens

Image
Olympus E-400

The Olympus E-400 is the lightest camera in this class, weighing in at just 420g. This gives some cause for concern, is it robust? Especially when you find out it's constructed from plastic, regardless it is appealing in it's current spec as it is the smallest and lightest digital SLR in the world.

The E-400 specifications are top notch with a 10 megapixel image sensor, a wide range of exposure modes, and the supersonic wave filter technology seen on other Olympus models which clean the sensor everytime you switch the camera on.

The E-400 has a FourThirds lens mount which is becoming increasingly popular among lens manufactorers, making it a simple task to obtain new pieces for your kit without having to pay the hefty own brand prices.

Canon EOS 30D

Image
Canon EOS 30D

The 30D's build quality doesn't quite match up to the Nikons in this catagory, but will still take quite a beating. Body styling is comfortable with a good chunky hand grip giving you confidence when handling, there is a 2.5 lcd rear mounted screen which is a vast improvement on the 20D's.

The 30D's image quality is ok and now includes a 3.5% spot-metering option. Colours are punchy but there is no real improvement over the 20D. If your looking to change cameras and Canon is the option you've decided to take then the 30D is a good buy, but if you're a 20D user then there is insufficient improvement to warrent the upgrade.
