 Tip: Observe, Look, Observe Closer

Figure life drawing is all about observation of the anatomy. But when drawing from memory without observing a figure, we often get many human features horribly out of proportion. Why? Our memories do not measure precise proportions, they just take in the basic appearance. We apply that to the environment around us and recognise things that way.For example, when we are very young we get used to looking up at adults, and have a perspective of the human head from below. This way the human head looks big in perspective to the body. We have that perspective of the head for many years and it becomes a rule in our memories. When we are adult that rule is still prominent when we try to draw. That’s why it’s so important to OBSERVE to overcome this recognition trickery. If you have a model to work from then really use her or him to observe the perspective, proportions, shapes, and contours. Observe and take note of the shades, tones, and textures. Your memory will play tricks on you, so: OBSERVE! LOOK! LEARN!
