Billy and Bonnie's Adventures

This story was written by my mum Marie and it was her first attempt at a children's story. Hopefully one day we may publish it in memory of Marie. Please let us know if you like Billy and Bonnie's Adventures. Billy and Bonnie are two kittens who go to live on a farm and have lots of fun and some great adventures read on...

Our new owners brought us home to a lovely farm which had all sorts of animals living on it. We were given lovely sheepskin beds, which were warm and cosy and we had some delicious food to eat.  The kitchen was always filled with lovely smells of cooking food. Everyone laughed and joked and we got plenty of snuggles and cuddles from the farmer’s wife. We had lots of toys and played chase with each other up and down the stairs and round and round the kitchen, often stopping to see things that went round and round too. Those things were in something called a washing machine.  A washing machine makes dirty clothes clean again. After that we would go exploring under beds and in cupboards.  In one of the cupboards there lived a monster, called a Hoover, it roared like a dragon and once tried to eat Billy's tail. We now hide whenever it comes out of the cupboard.

Finally the day came when we went outside by ourselves to meet the other animals; some of them were huge and made a silly noise like this MOO! Later we found out they were called cows and they provided milk for the farm and for us, yum, yum! There were chickens who laid eggs which were very tasty, although we were only allowed to have them as a special treat. Some were dirty animals, grunting and rolling around in the mud. They were called pigs.  The pigs smelt horrible. If we ever got that dirty, it would take ages for us to have a wash and get clean. Some animals, called sheep, were very cuddly and we would ride on their backs around the farm and across the field.  We always kept our claws in because we didn't want to hurt them.  The farmer made us some special seats so we wouldn't fall off. We met some strange animals called goats.  The goats ate everything in sight.  If anyone bent down the goats would butt their bottom and make them fall over.  They were very naughty but they did make us laugh. We all became really good friends.

Then there were the rabbits.  Mrs. Rabbit had five babies.  The baby rabbits were called kittens too.  They all lived in a hole called a warren, which was under the ground. When the rabbits moved around they bobbed up and down and we found them very funny.

One morning we awoke very early.  After a big stretch we decided to go and see if we could find some new friends. Soon we came to a field that we hadn't seen before.  That is when we bumped into a very sad scarecrow. He was crying and we felt very sorry for him indeed. We crept a little closer to see if we could to help to cheer him up. Billy said, “Please stop crying, you are making all your clothes wet. Can we help?” The scarecrow stopped crying and in between sobs replied, "I can't scare the crows away anymore. They just laugh at me and eat the corn that I am trying to protect.  They laugh so much that they put their wings on their bellies and roll around on the ground. The farmer is getting very cross with me and he said that if I can't scare them he will have to send me away. It's only fair because he is losing so much of his corn. I'm so sad and I don't know what to do."

With that he started crying again.

Billy whispered to me, "I think I have an idea. What do birds hate most? Cats. What are we? Cats. If we hide in the scarecrow’s coat and wait, we could jump out on the crows when they come back. That should see them off shouldn't it?" I was a little worried because there were lots of crows and only three of us, but we decided to give it a try.  We told the scarecrow of our cunning plan and after some arguing we were sat silently inside his coat and keeping as still as statues. We didn’t want the crows to know we were there. After what seemed like hours, but was only seven and a half minutes, the crows flew back and landed in the field.  They pecked at the corn and teased poor Mr. Scarecrow.  All of a sudden we burst out from the scarecrow’s coat like rockets, meowing and hissing at the top of our voices.

They banged into each other and panicked at the site of two crazy, noisy kittens. When the crows finally calmed down and flew away, we rolled around laughing while Mr. Scarecrow kept thanking us.  He was very happy and we were very pleased with ourselves.

After all the excitement, we wandered off home to bed so we could sleep and dream of what adventures tomorrow might bring.

We still visit Mr. Scarecrow who hasn't seen a bird since that day and he

was asked to be in an advert for corn on the television, so he's really happy now.
