Poetry in motion at multimedia event Print E-mail
Thursday, 18 September 2008

8:10pm Friday 26th September 2008

A POETRY in motion tour has proved such a success it has been extended and returns to Southend on Sunday.

Southend-based multimedia event Sundown is hosting the night as part of the New Writing Partnership’s Poetry Link five-night tour.

The tour, which is funded by the partnership, is called the Poetry Link and visits Southend, Norwich, Peterborough, St Albans and Colchester.

After a successful run of events between April and June 2008, the Poetry Link has been extended until the end of 2009, taking place once a month in each venue on the circuit.

The first stop at the Royal Hotel, High Street, Southend, on Sunday, includes poetry and spoken word, comedy, music and visuals.

Poetry comes from Elvis McGonagall, a former World Slam Champion 2006, and occasional guest on BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live programme. He has also performed at Edinburgh Fringe and Latitude.

Spoken word support comes from Justin Coe and Simon Blackman, two local comic poets known to Sundown audiences.

Other entertainment on the night comes in the form of music from Plus Plus and Adem, whose latest album of alt-folk covers has won much critical acclaim.

A short film, Silence is Golden, which won the TCM Classic Shorts Award at the London Film Festival in 2006, will also be shown.

Open mic poetry will be open to any who would like to perform on a first come, first served basis.

Doors open at 6.30pm, entrance is £4.
